Pressure treated softwood needs less maintenance than you may think.

Handy Hints

Softwood is a natural product that can twist or warp through changes in climatic conditions. To minimise this, Torridge Gates Ltd products should always be sited on firm and level ground that is away from areas where water collects.

During the treatment process, some grain may be raised – you can enhance your product by a little fine sanding of any raised edges.

Green marking may become visible as salt leaves the timber as it dries following pressure treatment. It will fade over time and does not affectthe performance of the product. Changes in the weather may cause fixings to loosen but these can be tightened up as appropriate.

Softwood may at times develop cracks in the surface, these are called shakes. Shakes are a natural occurrence and can be more prevalent during changes in temperature and humidity as the timber expands and contracts.

Please note that this will not affect the performance or durability of your product. If desired, any shakes can be rectified by applying proprietary wood glue making sure to follow the  manufacturer’s instructions at all times. Once dry this can be sanded accordingly, without having any effect on the treatment or performance of the product. Application of a protective water repellent coating can reduce cracking as it stops moisture penetration, one of the causes of this natural process in timber products.

To keep softwood products in good condition, wash down surfaces regularly with a wood-cleaning product.

Your Torridge Gates Ltd product will gradually weather in colour, first to a honey brown and eventually to a silver grey. This does not indicate any loss of preservative protection. If you wish to retain the look of your freshly pressure-treated timber, you can use a protective wood stain with a UV locker to stop the greying process.

Pressure treated products should not receive any further treatment until the timber is fully dry, as this could cause the timber to warp or split.

A quality wood stain or paint can also be used to add colour to your timber product as part of your maintenance routine, or to create a coloured design feature for your garden. Apply the wood stain or paint in dry weather and to the manufacturer’s full recommendations.

Maintenance of any coating should be carried out each year, or sooner if needed. A quick clean with soapy water or a wood cleaner, and a maintenance coat of wood stain or paint, is a quick and simple job that will keep your timber product looking great for a lifetime.

When applying a wood stain or paint, pay particular attention to horizontal surfaces and areas that may collect water. The horizontal planes are where the coating will wear quicker, whereas vertical surfaces can last for years before a fresh coat is required. We would recommend the Protek range of water-based products, or Restol for an oil-based alternative.

We can supply all of these and more at our premises at Merton.

Sheds - Pressure preservative treatment of our shed timbers is designed to protect against rot and insect attack to give the softwood an extended and low maintenance service life. The treatment is not intended to perform as a waterproofing agent and so water may permeate through the product. To help avoid this, a well maintained water repellent coating can be applied to the shed timbers, carefully following the manufacturer’s instructions at all times. A high-quality wood stain or paint will help to seal the shed by creating a water-repellent coating.

A good micro-porous wood stain will allow any internal moisture to evaporate out of the building walls.

In the unlikely event a product is faulty or damaged upon delivery; any issue must be advised within a reasonable period. The definition of reasonable depends on the product and how obvious the fault is, however, even with more complex items you should work on the basis that this is no more than three to four weeks from receipt. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Whilst your delivery driver is present ensure that you check your shipment before signing the delivery receipt, as notifications of damages or shortages should be noted on the signed proof of delivery
